Getting an iPad ready to sell takes a few minutes. These steps protect your data and make sure nothing stops the sale.

1. Back up your iPad

Go to Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then iCloud Backup, and tap Back Up Now, or back it up to a computer. Stay on Wi-Fi until the backup finishes.

2. Unpair your Apple Pencil and keyboard

If you are keeping your Apple Pencil or a Bluetooth keyboard, forget them in Settings under Bluetooth so they do not stay paired to an iPad you no longer own.

3. Sign out and turn off Find My

While Find My is on, Activation Lock keeps the iPad tied to your Apple Account, and a locked iPad cannot be sold. Go to Settings, tap your name, scroll down and tap Sign Out, then enter your password when asked.

4. Erase all content and settings

Go to Settings, then General, then Transfer or Reset iPad, and tap Erase All Content and Settings. The iPad returns to its factory state.

5. Take out the SIM card

If your iPad has cellular service and a physical SIM card, take it out and keep it. If it uses an eSIM, ask your carrier about moving or removing the plan before you erase.

6. Tell us about its condition

Send us the model, its storage, whether it has cellular, and its condition, with a few photos of the screen and the back. An accurate description gives you an accurate offer.

What affects the offer for your device

Your checklist

  • Backed up to iCloud or a computer
  • Apple Pencil and keyboard unpaired
  • Signed out, Find My off
  • Erased: all content and settings
  • SIM card removed
  • Condition described, with photos
